The best of both worlds - phones that combine a touchscreen AND keypad

Touchscreen phones are great, but it could be argued they lose something in not having a keypad, as well. Well, how about a phone that combines a touchscreen AND a keypad? Let's take a look at what's on the market now, and look forward to two upcoming phones...

Sony Ericsson X1 - showing the world how Windows should be done...

Released at the tail end of 2008, the Sony Ericsson X1 is the Swedish/Japanese manufacturer's first foray into the world of Windows Mobile phones, and quite frankly, it's one of the greatest Windows Mobile phones ever made. It's ludicrously powerful, and has a unique 'arc slider' mechanism to reveal the keyboard, but more than that, the Sony Ericsson X1 has about every conceivable bell and whistle it's possible for mobile phones to have. GPS, WiFi, and HSDPA, it does them all with aplomb.

And since the screen resolution is a whopping 800x480 pixels, it tops nearly every other mobile phone in existence for sharpness of screen. The only downside, technically speaking, of the Sony Ericsson X1 is its camera, coming in at just 3 megapixels. But (and its a big but), since Sony Ericsson put exceptional cameras on their mobile phones, a 3 megapixel Sony Ericsson camera is probably not that far off the quality of a 5 megapixel Nokia camera. All in all, it is TRULY incredible.

Samsung Tocco Ultra - going for an old-school keypad

But what happens if you want a phone that has both a touchscreen AND a keypad? Then for you, there's the Samsung Tocco Ultra, that combines the touchscreen goodness of the Tocco, with the sleek looks of the Ultra Edition series, to make a phone that's shockingly thin, considering it includes both a huge touchscreen, and a full alphanumeric keypad. The Samsung Tocco Ultra also inherits the TouchWiz interface from its predecessor, and that makes for an incredible user experience. The features are better than the Arena, too, as it also has an 8 megapixel camera.

Nokia N97 - the ultimate handheld computer?

While the Sony Ericsson X1 delivers true smartphone thrills in the shape of Windows Mobile, and the Samsung Tocco Ultra makes for one of the sexiest touchscreen phones ever, the frankly awesome Nokia N97 is on course to become one of the best touchscreen phones of 2009. This uses the same Symbian S60 Touch interface and crams it within the shell of a proper, full-tilt smartphone. Which means it's got a massive, 3.5 inch screen, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, and the camera's been upgraded to 5 megapixels. The Nokia N97 is, obviously, destined to be the new flagship Nseries mobile phone, and it's genuinely as powerful as the rumours said, with HSDPA, sat-nav, digital compass, and integrated Flash, meaning you get an internet experience that tops any other mobile phones! Put it like this: the Nokia N97 is unbelievable. It easily outdoes other most other mobile phones and I'm predicting that the Nokia N97 has the potential to totally DESTROY the competition next year!
